Nationally, the number of new and closed workers’ compensation claims fell between 2008 and 2010. The drop in claims may be caused by fewer workers willing to file claims for benefits or by workers staying on benefits longer due to the poor economy. Interestingly, although the number of claims fell, the cost of claims rose. Medical payments rose approximately 17%, while indemnity payments rose approximately 10%.
